Transgendered murder victim Emmon Bodfish was known for doing
everything he could to be unknown and there was perhaps no greater symbol of
his reclusivity than his home on his seven acre estate in Orinda. Meanwhile,
Bodfish's coroner's report indicates he may have struggled with his killer.

Last Thursday, August 19, this reporter was allowed to accompany three
of Bodfish's close friends along with his lawyer and executor Garrett Riegg, as
they returned to that home along Miner Road, an area known for some of the
highest priced real estate in the East Bay. The Bodfish home is just a
25-minute drive from San Francisco but the property is so wooded and isolated,
one could easily get the feeling that they are hundreds of miles away from
anything resembling a major city.

Although Riegg estimates the property to be worth about $2 million,
the house itself is extremely modest and looks more like a cabin in the middle
of the Sierra than a home in an exclusive Bay Area bedroom community. It's just
two bedrooms, one bath, with a smaller cabin on a hill overlooking the home.
The house has a very rustic feel and Bodfish's friends say that was in keeping
with his nature-based Druid faith.

A third friend, Doug Handler, also spoke with great affection about
Emmon Bodfish. The friends were allowed to claim a few sentimental items that

Bodfish died in the solitude of that home that he cherished so much
during his life. Now, almost two months after his bludgeoning death, much of
his home still remains how he left it but much has changed. Bodfish's body was
found on the floor in the living room next to a bookcase. Now, many of the
books that became bloodstained are packed away in plastic bags. A square patch
of carpet is cut away from the Oriental rug where his head lay.

The B.A.R. obtained a copy of Bodfish's coroner's report which appears
to indicate a struggle he had with his attacker. The official cause of death is
listed as "blunt-force head injuries." The report details fractures to his
skull and facial bones and cuts to the forehead and upper lip. Bruises were
found on his chin, legs, shoulder, and back. "A decorative screen with a glass
front was standing to the right of the body," the report details. "The glass

Emmon Bodfish (1943 – 1999) druid, plumber, investment advisorOriginally from Ohio, Emmon Bodfish was active in the Reformed Druids of North America. He produced the Druid Missal-Any Magazine 1983-1991, some of which was reprinted in A Reformed Druid Anthology, 2nd Edition, Volume 3: The Magazine Volume. At this time he corresponded with trans woman Tadhg MacCrossan, in the period before she wrote The Sacred Cauldron. His wisdom is still quoted on Druid sites.
As his prior identity, Margaret, Bodfish ran a pool maintenance and plumbing business, The Blue Lagoon. Later he worked as an investment advisor. He owned a simple home in the affluent Orinda area outside San Francisco. He also owned a town-house in Marin County. In the late nineties he was apparently isolated and depressed, and occasionally reverted to being a woman.
In June 1999 Emmon was found bludgeoned to death. The next day his son Max Wills was found, an apparent suicide in a Santa Monica hotel room. Max was known to have suffered from long term depression but was reluctant to kill himself while his mother was alive.
Later the police discovered a floor safe containing $60,000 in gold and coins. A drill had been found at the same spot but there was no sign that it was used to pry out the safe. In addition a police investigator apparently contracted Q fever in the Bodfish home.

The murder remains unsolved. Different possibilities have been suggested including transphobia, family involvement, a fustrated robbery and even, based on an entry in his diary, that Emmon contracted his own death.
The Druid sites do not mention the murder.

OBIT: Woman dies in vehicle crash near Walnut Creek
Woman dies in vehicle crash near Walnut Creek
WALNUT CREEK -- A 44-year-old woman died Saturday morning in a vehicle crash in unincorporated Contra Costa County, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The accident occurred about 6:30 a.m. when the Walnut Creek woman was driving a 2011 Nissan Versa eastbound on Treat Boulevard, west of Walnut Creek, Officer J. Johnson said.
For an unknown reason, she veered off the roadway and crashed into a light pole on the southeast corner of Treat Boulevard, near Cherry Lane, Johnson said.
The woman, who has not been named, was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where she was pronounced dead, he said.
The accident is under investigation, authorities said.
Police said they do not know the speed at which she was driving or if alcohol or drugs played a role.

Preston passed away peacefully in his home. He was a loving husband to his wife Lois for 58 years. He was also a father to Jerry and Patti Jo, a father-in-law to Debbie and David, grandfather to Bill, Mike, Jesse, Eli and Britni and a loving great grandfather. He is also survived by three brothers and two sisters.
Dad, Papa or Preston was a man that worked hard everyday of his life and yet still made the time to be a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfa-ther and true friend to all.
Preston was born in North Carolina, served in the Navy for 4 years and after-wards attended Campbell University. Preston had many jobs throughout his life. He was a very successful business man in many various fields. Of all the business ventures he pursued; his passion for construction and farming were among his favorites. Family and friends were most important in his life. Preston relished mentoring, teaching and helping others succeed and to be their best. We will all miss his guidance, expertise, support and love.
Family and friends are invited to join the service at Oak Hill on Wed. 11/28 at 2pm.

Alamo man who died in burning vehicle identified

The California Highway Patrol said 60-year-old Michael Sevenau died after the silver 2000 Jaguar he was driving went off the road, hit a tree and caught fire. The wreck happened just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
An investigation showed the Jaguar was traveling east on Stone Valley Road and wound up in the west side of the road before colliding first with some mailboxes, CHP Officer John Fransen said.
The Jaguar then spun around, broke through a wooden fence and down a dirt embankment before hitting the tree. Police are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the wreck.
Investigators have not yet determined if Sevenau suffered a medical issue while he was behind the wheel. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Contact Rick Hurd at 925-945-4789 and follow him at Twitter.com/3rderh

WALNUT CREEK — Two promising students — one a freshman at San Diego State and the other who studied engineering at Stanford University — died Tuesday in what police said looked like a murder-suicide in a home just north of Ygnacio Valley Road.
Clare Orton, a 19-year-old majoring in environmental engineering in San Diego, was found dead in her parents’ Walnut Creek home off Homestead Avenue. Also there was the body of Scott Bertics, a 21-year-old Lafayette resident who had attended Stanford.
Police called to the neighborhood around 6:50 a.m. said they found the two dead from gunshot wounds inside a home on Holton Court.
The two knew each other and had dated, police said.
She had graduated from Las Lomas High School in 2014 and he from Acalanes in Lafayette in 2012. Both were interested in engineering and both were long distance runners on the track teams at their high schools.
Orton’s family lived in the home for more than 10 years, said neighbor Linda Darnsteadt.
The “very pleasant” college student was visiting her home for the summer break from San Diego State, where she had completed her first year, Darnsteadt said.
“I’m just so sad. That’s so tragic,” she said.
Darnsteadt and her husband Gary said that they did not hear gunshots.
“We knew something tragic had happened, but we didn’t know what,” Linda Darnsteadt said. Police cars filled the cul-de-sac until noonOrton was an honors student at San Diego State, according to a school merit page. Her Facebook page includes a reference to membership in the Society of Women Engineers at San Diego State and to the Eco-Action Club at Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek.
For a photo of a rainbow posted on her Facebook page, she wrote, “When the sunrise is underwhelming, turn around, you may see a double rainbow.”
Bertics was on leave of absence from Stanford and last attended the school in the fall of 2014, a school spokesman said.
Stanford’s website lists Bertics as a member of a team that in 2013 worked on project called “Controlling Robot Dynamics with Spiking Neurons.” He is also credited in a 2014 paper by some of the same team members for developing the driver interface in a project titled: “Controlling Articulated Robots in Task-Space with Spiking Silicon Neurons.”
A 2011 Github entry shows his pleasure at winning an animation code award. “I wrote this program during the summer quarter in 2011 and it won the Stanford CS106A graphics contest!”
Bertics also had a YouTube channel called “sbertics” on which he put videos of his projects, but the newest videos were of glider flights over Oahu in Hawaii. His electronic device videos were three years old.

They were charged in April 2013 along with 32 other alleged members and associates of two Russian-American organized crime enterprises in an indictment that included racketeering, money laundering, extortion, and various gambling offenses. Two Defendants Sentenced for Participating in Racketeering
Conspiracy with Russian-American Organized Crime Enterprise
Operating International Sportsbook That Laundered More Than
$100 Million
Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that ANATOLY GOLUBCHIK was sentenced yesterday in Manhattan federal court to five years in prison, and VADIM TRINCHER was also sentenced today to five years in prison for participating in a racketeering conspiracy in connection with their roles as members of a Russian-American organized crime enterprise. GOLUBCHIK and TRINCHER were also each ordered to forfeit more than $20 million in cash, investments, and real property. They were charged in April 2013 along with 32 other alleged members and associates of two Russian-American organized crime enterprises in an indictment that included racketeering, money laundering, extortion, and various gambling offenses. GOLUBCHIK and TRINCHER were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman.
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said: “The sentences
meted out to Anatoly Golubchik and Vadim Trincher are just
and appropriate penalties for the roles the defendants
played in this far-reaching, Russian-American organized
crime ring. I’d like to thank the Federal Bureau of
Investigation, the New York City Police Department, and the
Internal Revenue Service for their tireless efforts in
working to ensure that the members of this underground
enterprise were held to account for their crimes.”
According to the indictment, other documents filed in
Manhattan federal court, and statements made at various
proceedings in this case, including today’s sentencing:
The Taiwanchik-Trincher Organization (the “Organization”)
was a criminal enterprise with strong ties to Russia and
Ukraine. The enterprise operated a high-stakes, illegal
sports gambling business out of New York City that catered
primarily to Russian oligarchs living in Ukraine and Russia.
GOLUBCHIK and TRINCHER were U.S.-based participants in the
enterprise. GOLUBCHIK and TRINCHER booked sports bets that
reached into the millions of dollars and laundered the
proceeds of the Organization’s international sportsbook.
Between 2006 and April 2012, the enterprise laundered
approximately $100 million in proceeds from their gambling
operation in Russia and Ukraine through shell companies and
bank accounts in Cyprus; and of this $100 million,
approximately $50 million was subsequently sent from Cyprus
into the United States. Once the money had been transferred
to the United States, it was either laundered through
additional shell companies or invested in legitimate
investments, such as hedge funds and real estate.
The Taiwanchik-Trincher Organization operated under the
protection of Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov, who is known as a
“Vor,” a term translated as “Thief-in-Law,” that refers to a
member of a select group of high-level criminals from the
former Soviet Union. Tokhtakhounov used his status as a Vor
to resolve disputes with clients of the high-stakes illegal
gambling operation with implicit and sometimes explicit
threats of violence and economic harm. Between December 2011
and February 2013, Tokhtakhounov was paid at least
approximately $12 million for his services by the
Taiwanchik-Trincher Organization. Tokhtakhounov is also
under indictment in the Southern District of New York for
his alleged involvement in bribing officials at the 2002
Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Tokhtakhounov
is a fugitive and is still being sought.

Twenty-eight defendants in this case have pled guilty and
two have entered into deferred prosecution agreements. The
defendants who have pled to date have agreed to forfeit, in
total, more than $68 million. The following defendants have
pled guilty, and have been sentenced or await sentencing:
- Bryan Zuriff pled guilty to gambling charges on July 26, 2013, and was sentenced on November 25, 2013.
- William Barbalat pled guilty to gambling charges on August 14, 2013, and was sentenced on December 16, 2013.
- Kirill Rapoport pled guilty to gambling charges on August 16, 2013, and was sentenced on December 19, 2014.
- Edwin Ting and Justin Smith pled guilty to gambling charges on September 4, 2013, and were sentenced on January 21, 2014, and January 6, 2014, respectively.
- Dmitry Druzhinsky and David Aaron pled guilty to gambling charges on October 4, 2013, and were sentenced on April 18, 2014, and February 14, 2014, respectively.
- Alexander Zaverukha pled guilty to gambling charges on October 10, 2013, and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 1, 2014.
- Nicholas Hirsch pled guilty to conspiring to commit wire fraud on October 16, 2013, and was sentenced on February 25, 2014.
- Anatoly Shteyngrob pled guilty to conspiring to commit money laundering on October 17, 2013, and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 10, 2014.
- Yugeshwar Rajkumar pled guilty to gambling charges on October 18, 2013, and was sentenced on March 25, 2014.
- Stan Greenberg pled guilty to conspiring to commit racketeering on October 22, 2013, and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 2, 2014.
- Arthur Azen pled guilty to conspiring to commit money laundering and conspiring to collect extensions of credit by extortionate means on November 5, 2013, and was sentenced on April 9, 2014.
- Hillel Nahmad pled guilty to gambling charges on November 12, 2013, and was sentenced on April 30, 2014.
- Vadim Trincher pled guilty to conspiring to commit racketeering on November 14, 2013, and was sentenced on April 30, 2014.
- Eugene Trincher pled guilty to gambling charges on November 14, 2013, and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 9, 2014.
- Anatoly Golubchik pled guilty to conspiring to commit racketeering on November 15, 2013, and was sentenced on April 29, 2014.
- Illya Trincher pled guilty to gambling charges on November 15, 2013, and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 8, 2014.
- Ronald Uy pled guilty to structuring financial transactions on November 25, 2013, and was sentenced on March 27, 2014.
- Moshe Oratz pled guilty to gambling charges on December 3, 2013, and was sentenced on April 9, 2014.
- Michael Sall pled guilty to interstate travel in aid of an unlawful activity (illegal gambling) and Jonathan Hirsch pled guilty to gambling charges on December 4, 2013. Sall was sentenced on April 18, 2014, and Hirsch is scheduled to be sentenced on May 9, 2014.
- Noah Siegel pled guilty to gambling charges on December 5, 2013, and was sentenced on April 10, 2014.
- Molly Bloom pled guilty to gambling charges on December 12, 2013, and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 2, 2014.
- Alexander Katchaloff pled guilty to gambling charges on January 16, 2014, and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 20, 2014.
- Donald McCalmont, John Jarekci, a/k/a “John Hanson,” and Abraham Mosseri pled guilty to making a fraudulent tax statement, to failing to file a tax return, and causing a financial institution to participate in a lottery related matter, respectively, on January 24, 2014, and are scheduled to be sentenced on May 29, 2014, May 28, 2014, and May 21, 2014, respectively.
- William Edler and Peter Feldman entered into deferred prosecution agreements on April 11, 2014.
Mr. Bharara praised the investigative work of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation, the New York City Police
Department, and the Internal Revenue Service.
The case is being prosecuted by the Office’s Violent and
Organized Crime Unit. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Harris M.
Fischman, Joshua A. Naftalis, Peter J. Skinner, and Kristy
J. Greenberg of the Violent and Organized Crime Unit are in
charge of the prosecution. Assistant
U.S. Attorney Alexander Wilson of the Office’s Money
Laundering and Asset Forfeiture Unit is responsible for the
forfeiture aspects of the case.
